Many success stories start with some sort of a wake-up call, a tragedy or an illness. At 26, Ivana Mearns was diagnosed with M.E. She was a lively, ambitious person, working in London, with some promising opportunities ahead of her. But instead of taking her career to the next level, she was feeling more and more exhausted.
On one of those days when she barely managed to get out of bed she opened a wedding magazine, trying to convince herself that she would get better soon and her plans won’t need to be put on hold. Her eyes fell on a photograph of a designer bridal headpiece and she thought “… I could make that!” At this point, Ivana had no idea that this might lead to becoming of a CEO and Founder of a media company in the future.
With her aptitude for geometry and pattern making, she did not need any training in headdress design. She started handcrafting bridal headpieces straight away, using materials ordered online. As her health was improving, her business was growing. From the occasional online sale resulting from a magazine advert, she moved onto establishing a partnership with a local boutique, working on bespoke orders.
Her designs appeared in national wedding magazines and were worn by models at fashion shows. Ivana would not let any PR opportunity go by. She designed a headdress for a short film, for an opera singer and for Miss Hertfordshire winners. Her jewellery sets were even worn by Miss England 2013 at Miss World Competition in Bali.
Although this might sound like an impressive career, Ivana felt that she was not fully aligned with her life goals. As many of her clients and friends expressed their desire to learn advanced wirework techniques and follow her path, Ivana has put together a comprehensive online diploma course, teaching tiara making via detailed e-tutorials. A brand new business called “Wedding Crafts Academy” was born.
The Wedding Crafts Academy website has evolved into a lively blog and Ivana’s posts reach over 100,000 unique monthly viewers across various social media platforms. Starting from January 2020, Ivana also supports business owners via a monthly “Microbusiness of the Month” blog series and by sharing videos called “Super Simple Tips of Microbusinesses.” Blogging is Ivana’s way of encouraging other entrepreneurs to take the first steps on their journey.
